Overview
Located in the Riverina district of south west New South Wales, Balranald is a high-grade critical minerals deposit rich in natural rutile and premium zircon, accompanied by important light and heavy rare earths.
Iluka has developed, trialled and commissioned a novel remotely-operated underground mining technology to access the deposit, which is located approximately 70 metres below the surface within a hyper-saline water table. This technology enables access to ore bodies previously thought uneconomic, with marked reductions in both environmental disturbance and carbon intensity relative to traditional extraction techniques.
The definitive feasibility study was completed in late 2022, confirming the technical and commercial viability of the technology, and Iluka’s Board approved the final investment decision for Balranald in February 2023.
Construction was completed safely in 2025, delivering approximately 250 jobs, and mining and processing of run-of-mine ore commenced in January 2026.
Given its geology and final product mix, Balranald's successful construction and commissioning is an important development for both Iluka and the broader mineral sands industry.
